Recipe: Apple + Pear Puree
When a chef is serving up something for the minis, the last thing she wants to hear is it’s as bland as baby food. Aura chef (and mom) Rachel Klein experiments with food combos at home to help broaden her baby’s palate. Here’s her tasty take on a basic.
Ingredients
2 apples (Red Delicious or Gala)
2 pears
1 stick cinnamon
Filtered water1. Peel and core both apples and pears.
2. Place apples and cinnamon stick in a stainless steel pot and pour in enough filtered water to just cover.
3. Bring to a simmer and cook until fork-tender (not mushy).
4. Add pears and mix with a wooden spoon.
5. Cook two minutes.
6. Strain and reserve liquid (might be needed to thin out puree).
7. Remove cinnamon stick.
8. Puree in blender and cool.Tip: If freezing, put puree in ice cube trays wrapped in plastic and pop a cube out when you’re ready to use.
Makes 1½ cups
For ages 6 months and up

Photos taken in May
When I even go a weekday without posting I feel like I’ve fallen behind so much on my updates on Zoe. So this one is going to be a photo overload. Lots of food photos just to show you what piggy’s been eating.

So I now know she’s not big on sandwiches. OK! I get it Zoe! No more.
However she loving the watermellon.
Uh this is new. So we were eating dinner and then Miss Weirdo all of a sudden shuts her eyes close really tight and we’re just watching her like “What da?” and when she opens them she looks at our facial expression and just starts laughing. So she kept doing it. It was really cute and yet strange. Hahaha….

I didn’t know she didn’t like sandwiches at this point? She didn’t give me the memo till the day after.
She loved the fish sticks! She spit out the broccoli. You can tell when she’s done or when she doesn’t like something. She’ll either spit it out or do her dramatic “No” with the head shake and then face the opposite direction that you are sitting at and wait a few seconds till she thinks you moved the spoon with the nasty whatever on it.

She loves stickers. She loves peeling them off and shoving them in her mouth. *sigh* I cannot wait till she’gets to the age where she’s done tasting the world and just sticks to food.
When we were at Barnes there was a lil activity table and this lil girl who was like 6 bumps Zoe aside and goes “Beekyuh!” Man, lil girl, if your mommy wasn’t there I would have pushed you you lil brat.

Zoe went to the dentist for the first time! She was sooo good. She has 8 teeth so I wanted to get the ones that she had checked out.
I LOVE her dentist. If you guys are looking for a good pediatric dentist I highly recommend her. She’s really patient and really sweet.

The hubs and I were in a wedding and had to leave after we put her down. Honestly, putting Zoe down has never been easier. We can put her down without a peep most of the time. sometimes she’ll cry for a few minutes and then just pass out. All credit goes to moi. I am the baby whisperer.

A Fit of Giggles
You ever see those YouTube videos of babies who just go into these lil fit of giggle just by a noise or someone doing something repitively? I have been waiting FOREVER for that to happen with Zoe. I mean I’m talking since she was born! And guess what? It finally happened and it was like music to my ears…

Recipe: Macaroni + Cheese
I love this recipe and so does Zoe. My mom used to make it for us and then I got the recipe from her. I think it’s from a Better Homes + Garden Cookbook from like the 70′s or 80′s.
What you’ll need:
Note: For onions I use Spanish onions and for cheese I get the Land O’Lakes American Cheese (White) over the deli counter and ask for sandwich slices.
The Mac
Preheat the overn to 350 degrees.
Boil water and add macaroni and some salt.
Once it’s done drain it well and then pour the macaroni into a casserole/baking dish and set aside.
Advice: Set aside a little bit of cheese if you have lil boogers botherin’ you while you’re cooking and send them on their way.
The Sauce
In a saucepan melt the butter on low heat and sift in the flour while stirring so that it doesn’t clump up. Add the milk, salt, and pepper and raise the heat to medium. Keep stirring and add the onions. Slowly add the cheese and keep stirring or else the cheese will burn on the bottom of the pan. The easiest way to do this is to put in a 1/3 of the cheese, stir till it’s fully melted, add half of the remaining cheese, and so on. Once it’s all fully melted (as in no cheese clumps) pour it over the macaroni so that it’s evenly coated. Cover it in foil , poke some holes through it, and bake it in the over for about 35-40 minutes. -

Hat Day
So yesterday Miss Thang was sittin on my lap and I smelled something funky. I had just gotten finished changing her so I know that it wasn’t a diaper issue. The funkalicious odor was coming from her left ear. I saw dry puss. I stuck a q-tip in to see if it was wet inside and it turned up a lil yellow with some blood. We went to the dr’s today and he thinks she had an ear infection and that it ruptured. She’s on antibiotics now. And let me just say she went BESERK when she saw him and threw up a little bit of her lunch. She looked around the room like she was remembering what this place was and then when she saw him she lost it. Wow, I guess when you stick a needle in a baby enough times they’ll always remember you as ‘that’ person.
Poor thing. Man, I feel like there’s always something.
:: 04.13.09 :: Hat Day
Zoe has A LOT of hats that are hand-me-downs. So because she started off the day with her ever favorite reindeer headband I brought out her hat drawer.
After lunch she insisted that I take down our wedding photo so she could look at it. She loves this photo.
And during dinner time she insisted on sitting at the kitchen island with us.
