The Coxsackie Diary
So this coxsackie virus is a bitch and a half.
Thursday: Fever started around lunch time. She didn’t want to eat lunch so I just put her down for her nap. Later that evening she didn’t want to eat dinner either. Her father brushed her teeth before bedtime and she kept complaining that something hurt. He thought she was just trying to stall. When bedtime hit she didn’t even want her bottle of milk. So she went to sleep with her only meal that day being breakfast.
Friday: She must have been hungry cause she woke up at 5am to drink milk and then went back to sleep. She woke up at 7:30am and just drank a few ounces from her usual morning bottle. She kept pointing to her mouth and saying “aya” which is when I noticed the sores on her tongue. I gave her some canteloupe and red bean bread for breakfast. The second she bit into the canteloupe she started to cry. She stopped eating. She didn’t even want snacks. I put her down for her nap and after she woke up she was sooo hungry she asked for some raisin bread. She was so hungry but in so much pai n that she was crying while she was chewing. My heart hurt for her. I made her some Campbell’s Dora the Explored chicken noodle soup. She took a few bites only if I said things like “Zoe, look! It’s boots!” while pointing at the Boots like noodle floating on the spoon. She didn’t finish it. Dinner she skipped again. She refused her night time bottle of milk and we put her down for the night at 8:30. From 8:30-12pm she must have woken up at least 7 times. Let me just pencil in that this day was utter hell for me. She wanted me to pick her all day long and all day long it was “mommy! mommy!” This day will go down as the crankiest day she’s ever been….so far in her short life.
Saturday: She woke up 6am and asked for milk and went back to sleep. She woke up at 9:15. I noticed she had a rash on her butt. Not a diaper rash but more like spots here and there. Some of them were already scabbing up. I read that they could also get a rash on their bottom from the virus. She refused breakfast so I gave her a Yogurt pop that I had made the day before. She housed this. I’m sure it was soothing on her tongue. Lunch we tried to give her some more chicken soup but she shook her head no. She did however ask for milk after her nap which is so not routine but I was happy that something was going into her tummy. Dinner was spaghetti. We gave her noodles without the sauce and she happily ate it. She drank her 8oz of milk in the evening and again started her ritual of waking up consistently from 9-12. Finally at around 2:30 she woke up to play in the middle of the night. I gave the hubs ok to go out for his friend’s birthday. He got home at around 3:30 which is when Zoe and I heard him and she proceded to yell “appa yah!” at the top of the stairs. I think she went to back to bed sometime past 4 but I’m not sure cause I passed out before her.
Sunday: We skipped church today. I don’t want anyone else to get sick from this. It’s horrible. She was most definitely in better spirits. She ate another yogurt pop for breakfast. For lunch she finally had a whole bowl of chicken noodle soup. She didn’t eat dinner. I left the house a few hours in the evening with HKCho to go to Lila’s dol. I brought home some balloons and a goody box. Since it was bedtime she was looking for me so I came home just in time. Her father goes “Zoe let’s put on your pajamas and then mommy will come home.” She said “ok.” And then that’s when I walked in the room and she smiled her 1000 watt smile my way. She housed the mum mum crackers in the goody box. She loved it actually and was chewing it all funny. We gave her her bottle and she passed out but she woke up maybe only 2 more times before actually falling into deep sleep.
Today: She is definitely acting like the old Zoe. She still has the rash and the sores on her tongue. I think the worst is over. Now it’s just waiting for the rash and sores to go away.

Coxsackie Virus
Zoe’s word of the day: Chair and Poby
Update: I spoke too soon. She’s got little raised spots on her fingers and it looks like it’s starting on her feet as well. For the mommies who have gone through this can you give me advice or anything? How long does this last? Are the spots on the skin as painful as the sores in her mouth? I just put her down so I’ll be surfing the net for some answers.
My nephew is going dressed up as bruce lee this year. that should be pretty friggin cute. Hae Kyung I think you should send back the Mickey costume and dress Justin up as Nacho Libre. Omigod…we could like draw in belly hair with eyeliner pencil. he’d be sooo cute!
So Zoe’s had a fever since yesterday afternoon. She didn’t want to eat lunch or dinner. She didn’t even want her milk before bed. She did however wake up at like 5am to drink it this morning. Also when she woke up she kept pointing to her mouth and saying “aya”. So I bring her down for breakfast and I cut up some canteloupe. After her first bite she started crying and kept saying “aya aya” again. So I took a closer look and I noticed this white sores on her tongue. I’m sure there’s more but I saw about 5. I called up the doctor and he said it’s a virus and that we’ll just have to wait for it to pass. I hate that answer. I hate the friggin waiting game. It always feels like an eternity. So I tried to google it but she hogged up the laptop so I’m trying to do some research in this little window of opportunity I have in the office while she’s distracted. I’ thought it was Hand-Foot-Mouth disease but she doesn’t have anything on her feet or hands. Advice anyone?
She’s also started calling me mommy. I notice she calls me this when she’s really upset. It’s really cute actually. I like it better than umma. Also she hasn’t used a bib in MONTHS but I had to whip it out this morning cause she’s drooling a lot because of the sores. Poor baby. Get better soon Zoe. PREASE!
