  • We’re Back From Punta Cana!

We’re back!!! Omigod…the stuff I need to get down in writing…..

Our vacation was good. The first day however was HELL. Like as in H. E. L. L. Our flight was to leave at 8am. So we woke up at 4:30am and left the house at 5am. We hit traffic.  At 5am?! OH C’MON! And it was the we-weren’t-even-moving-an-inch type of traffic. This went on for 20 long, jovial minutes. Then it finally slowly started to move. Then there was another accident up the street so traffic was slowing down for that. Then we get to the toll booth and some idiot truck driver took the e-z pass lane when he didn’t even have e-z pass so a cop was writing up a ticket so we were waiting behind him to go. After that we passed yet ANOTHER car accident. WAKE UP PEOPLE! When we finally got to JFK it was a little past 6. So the hubs drops me and Zoe off, along with our bags, to go park the car in long term parking. 6:30 comes and goes….then 7… Finally at around 7:15am he shows up. They rush us to the front of the line to check in our 2 suitcases. If you go over 50lbs they charge you $50 per bag. My bag was 56lbs but because we were in such a rush they totally forgot to charge us. Then as we’re running throught security check the hubs runs my foot over with the stroller while I’m carrying Zoe so I trip and fall on my knee. You can hear people gasping. Not for MY well being but for Zoe’s. She was fine. I was still holding her upright. We get to security check and we realize that the ticket person didn’t print up a ticket for the hubby so he runs back! Then we go through security and because of my gigantoid purse with Zoe’s milk, water, and bio-feel drinks they search my bag! OY VEY! We finally put our shoes back on and we RUN! We’re running like as if the Italian mafia is after us. Zoe’s being carried by her dad and she looks like she could be getting shaken baby syndrome but she’s just cracking up cause she thinks it’s like the funniest thing. We finally get to our gate and it’s like 7:50 and they JUST started boarding. Such a crappy start to our first family vacation. WAIT! It gets better. Zoe was a saint on the plane. She passed out for 2 hours and she played and watched videos after she woke up. She was the perfect plane baby. We get to Punta Cana and it is hot. It actually felt like it was hot as hell but it was just cause it was sooo humid. We get to the hotel and while C is checking in Zoe and I are walking around the lobby. Checking in at this point is taking a long friggin time. I think we were in that lobby for at least 30 minutes. While Zoe and I were waiting I sat down on a couch and Zoe goes around the coffee table to the other couch. No problem. She climbs up and sits down. No problem. She stands up on the edge and before I can even go over and stop her she loses her footing and falls on her head on the marble floor. I rush over. She’s bawling. I check her face, check her mouth. It kinda looks like she may have bit her tongue a little bit but that’s minor. Now I’m just trying to calm her down. C comes over and goes “Oh my God. Her head.” She has this huge ass bump that is now protruding from her forehead. OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! The front desk brings over an ice cold towel that smells like it was infused with some type of herb. She wouldn’t let me put it on her head and was still crying. Oh my God. I was soooooo upset. I felt like crying. I was hot, it was humid, my baby just got hurt and won’t stop crying. What a horrible start to our vacation. I was sooo close to losing my shit. The bump was huge. It was about an inch and a half wide and it was protruding out like half an inch. I was mad at myself for letting her sit on the couch alone. Every day it went down a bit. By the time we got back home it was just a small bump but geeze… It’s just something a mother doesn’t want to experience happening to their child you know. I wanted to get her checked out but the hubs insisted that she was fine. She didn’t seem lethargic or was throwing up. She was playing fine. She was in good spirits. She seemed like her normal self. But every day I worried. I was a TOTAL hellicopter mom after that during the rest of the trip. It traumatized me pretty bad. That was the WORST of it.

The rest of the trip seemed to go smoothly. During the day it was pretty humid and in the evenings it would rain here and there. Zoe loved the beach. She loves sand. She likes to grab a handful and just see it all pour it out between her fingers. She loved the pool! She lost her balance twice in the toddler pool and went under. Hahaha… I know I’m mean. I laugh but I was right there. She’s darker than us. We call her our Mexican baby. Every night at 8:30 they have a kids disco night. Zoe was very popular. Parents were laughing at her. She stood out. One because she was the only Asian kid on stage. Two because she was a friggin dancing machine. I mean there were times where she was the ONLY person on stage dancing. *coughcoughstagewhorecoughcough* She was like the perfect stage kid. She danced her lil heart out and when people would clap she would stop to clap in sync. People loved her there. The woman selling Flinstone toys even gave Zoe a free backpack because she thought she was so cute. I got a lot of comments from non-English speaking parents after the dancing was all done. I didn’t understand what they were saying but it was usually something along the lines of “Baby. Nice.” Followed by a thumbs up. I guess the thumbs up thing is universal huh? Everyone would stop and talk to her in Spanish and coo at her and ask for high fives. She was very loved. She made lots of friends. We met a 3yr old British girl named Chloe. She was a total chubby and she was soo sweet. I loved her accent. Then we met a 6yr old girl named Emma from Toronto who adored Zoe. She came to the kids disco night 3 nights in a row and refused to dance. After she met Zoe she would only go up if Zoe went up to dance. We met a little German girl named Sarah and her brother Igor. Igor ran to hug Zoe and they lost their balance and Zoe fell backwards on the floor and started bawling so his mother gave her  handful of pringles. Their whole family loved watching Zoe dance and the mother told me that her husband wanted to know if they could take Zoe back to Germany with them. We met a lot of great really nice people.

Oh and another mommy low point, Zoe said her first bad word. Day one of swimming in the toddler pool I had taken her out of the pool to take a break and I was putting her back in and I noticed like little green seaweed lookign stuff floating in the water behind her and I was thinking ‘Where the heck is that coming from?’ I checked her diaper and she did a number 3 so I pulled her and kept saying “shit shit shit shit shit” as I carried her to my lounge chair. I laid her down so that I could change her diaper and she looked up at me and said in a really cute soft girly voice….”shit”. SHIT!

Here’s where I give my last bad news. My camera stopped working tuesday morning. I think I banged it on the trolly a bit too hard when I was getting on the night before while carrying Zoe. So I am in the shop for a new camera. I noticed now that I was cameraless how many kodak moments I was missing. I was really depressing for me. I finally caved and bought a disposable. I hate disposables though. So if anyone has the T1i let me know your thoughts on it.

So since I can’t post any photos since I can’t retrieve them from my camera which doesn’t even turn on anymore I leave you with a video of my my little twinkle toes. This is actually one of my favorite videos from the trip. It was the little girl Sarah’s birthday so her mom was cutting up cake for everyone and all the kids were taking a break eating cake with their parents. Two of the people hosting the show were on stage still dancing….and so was twinkle toes. At one point it looked like our lil one year old had 2 backstage dancers. Oh and the little girl with the blonde bob that you see talking to Zoe is Emma (the girl from Canada). Zoe’s grown fond of her and kept calling her unnie (older sister). The only way we could ever get her off stage is if the music stopped or if someone got up and carried her down whining.

    Words Zoe’s learned on vacation:
    backpack: backpock
    piggy: piggy
    flower: fahwuh
    bird: bur
happy birthday to you: happy to you you
    duck: duck
    turtle: turul
    go: guh
    stop: stop
    fish: pishie
    oh toodles: oh toowul
    pochacco: po ka ko
    badtz maru: ma rara

  • Awe, poor Z!!!  Gees, glad she’s doing well, looked like she had a BLAST dancing her little heart out.  :)   She’s so cute.  I had to have the boyfriend come to the page and told him I wanted a cute little thing like Z, PRONTO.  *kidding about the pronto thing*  He gets a kick out of the pass port photo.  Sometimes the best vacations start out pretty bad.  I’m really sorry your camera broke, I can relate.  :(   Poor camera.  Hmm…  I got the Nikon D90 and I love it.  I haven’t gotten to understand all the features of it, but it takes amazing photos…  Plus the video does really well too!  Welcome home!

  • I’m so glad you had a nice time and came back safely, other than Zoe’s bump. We missed you guys! Poor Zoe! =( I would have been flipping out as well. It really bothers me when my girls get hurt on their head or face. =(

Yeah about the other countries…..they take a long ass time on everything! I was going crazy when I headed down there because it would take 4ever checking in, ordering food, getting our food etc…I realized we Americans need to slow down a bit.

BTW You forgot SHIT to the list of words Zoe learned on vacation.

  • Is she better now?!  OMG this video is priceless!!!

  • What a way to start your vacation.  But at least the remainder of the time went smoothly.  I lost my camera on the 1st day of vacation too and.had to buy a disposable.  Forgot you had to turn the little wheely thing for each pic.

Hey – you forgot to add shit to her list of new words.  Hahaha.  Now, you have to spell everything out.  I’m a champion speller.

  • off to a rough start, but it certainly seemed like your daughter had a blast.  great video!

  • I guess all is well that ends well. Zoe looks so cute dancing.  Future clubber in the house. Great Video!

  • glad that miss zoe-ski’s all better.   she’s such a charmer! i hate it when we plan so far in advance to get to a place and stupid traffic and stupid people are the culprit.  bleh.

my first cuss word was sh*t too. i wonder how i’ll be able to control my potty mouth too when we have kids!

hope you find a great camera soon!

  • Aww, she’s so cute in the video!  Glad she is ok now.  Did security let youtake Zoe’s milk and water through or did they make you get rid of it?

  • @Chabuki - they let me take it and 4 bottle of bio feel.

  • hahaha you had me laughing at the she was shaking like she could get SBS! i’m sure it was not funny then, but you know how to tell a story to make it funny! glad that Z is ok after that horrible fall. thanks for my morning smile~miss happy feet sure knows how to boogie!

  • What an awful start to your vacation.  I’m glad that things got better towards the end.  Zoe’s such a cute dancer.  I can totally see her in a future episode of “So You Think You Can Dance?” hehehe….

  • maybe you should get a nikon since the rebel series are more beginner cameras?   Nikon was also the first to come out with the video function on their dslrs.  the t1i just followed along, so I’m sure the Nikon video function is a little more advanced.  Sorry about your camera breaking on vacation! It can’t be fixed?

What a chaotic start to your vacay!!  :(  and you left from JFK??  wow, that’s far!!  I’ve been through very similar experiences except not with kids!!  at least Zoe was good on the plane.  About the bump on the head, Emmy got the SAME EXACT thing.  The BIGGEST bump, it looked cartoon-like in the way that it protruded from her forehead.  I nearly freaked, but Emmy seemed fine.  Almost like she liked the fuss that was being made over her.

  • @so_droll80 - i can’t. i can’t leave canon. i’m totally pro-canon. hahaha i have ALWAYS had canon. it would feel like betrayal. haha ok…t1i it is. thanks jeenie.

omg don’t u hate it when it happens to their face or head? i go into fob mode and i’m liek “uh moh moh moh moh!”

  • i’m uploading a vid on vimeo as i write this.

  • @so_droll80 - oooh i rub you rong time. thanks big shexy.

  •  it’s sorta taking long to upload, and EMmy just woke up so I’ll send it to you when i get a chance during the day!

  • omg your first day was seriously the craziest!  glad to hear you had a fabulous family vacation…the twinkle toes video is adorable!

  • oh my gosh!!! she is soo~ cute she made my eyes tear up :)

  • that first paragraph… omg, what a horrible start to your vacation.  but i can relate bc a similar thing happened to us too.  it’s just crajee… i hate flying with kids.  glad zoe had a blast otherwise.  sorry about your camera.  i always get paranoid about losing/breaking our camera when we’re out (it’s always so bulky and heavy!).  sucks that it had to happen to you while you were in another country!

  • @PetiteMandoo - Cool, thanks. I hope they let us take M’s this weekend.  BTW, I think Matt has the T1i – ask him what he thinks.

  • you are the third person i know who went to DR last week!  anyway, love how zoe dances!!!!

  • @so_droll80 - it says it’s a private video and won’t let me view

  • okay, check now.

  • where in punta cana did you go?  we weny in may and had a good time…  sounds like u did too

  • i can’t believe you and zoe went through all that.  i would have been crying!!!  i’m glad zoe isn’t seriously hurt.

that video is awsome!  how can anyone not fall in love with her dancing like that!!

  • @modelvirus - we stayed at melia caribe tropical.

  • @so_droll80 - i like the quality. it’s def better than a flip. and you didn’t have to convert the format to soemthing else before you loaded it onto to vimeo right? what format is it? it’s not wmv right?

  • @PetiteMandoo - i didn’t convert anything.  downloaded it directly from my memory card.  i dunno what format it’s in.

  • geebus, talk about bad luck!  sorry to hear you had such a bumpy start to your vaca, but i’m glad things worked out in the end.

    dancing zoe is so cute!

  • that’s too bad you broke your camera!  At least  you have a cute video of Zoe dancing. =)

  • I just died watching Zoe groove. She is so dang cute!

  • canon eos 5-d mark ii, 21 megapixs with hd video. sweet jesus.

Three things: 1) I love how zoe is holding off on the dancing, just squatting on the stage and then decides to get up, like she deliberately decided this is my moment! 2) her game face is great! 3) love her on stage with the the background dancers.

  • Whoa what a crazy morning.  Glad you caught the flight though… and glad that Z’s ok.

  • @neglected_middle_child - yeah do you know much that costs?

  • welcome back! that video is so cute. zoe is such a star~ i’m glad the rest of your vacay was better than the start of it. and i can’t believe your camera broke!

  • Sounded like you had a great time except for the 1st day.  Poor mommy!  It is always horrible to see your child fall.  I’m always terrify that Matthew will do a spectacular fall onto some hard floor…so I am always telling him be careful.  (Very funny when he tells me the same thing.)

LOL…I wished your camera was working.  I would had love to seen pictures of Zoe getting her grooves on on the disco floor.  Zoe is the new disco queen!

  • She’s gonna be an awesome dancer when she grows up!

  • dang…what a crazy trek just to get to the damn airport and more drama in the airport!! that is craziness.  did you get any mosquito bites on your lil goongdengs? we were seriously attacked by mosquitos when we were there that we locked ourselves in the hotel room every night and played drinking games… so lame.

  • she’s so cute!!! It sounds like you need a vacation from your vacation??? um.. she learned one more word.. shit. haha.

Can I ask you a question? I just bought a Canon XSI… and I need to get a lens… just something basic and hopefully not too expensive. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • @gohngju - what’s ur budget

  • 100-~150? Is that too little?

  • I love my T1i.  For the price, its a great camera.  If you can swing it, the 50D is even better and only a few hundred more.  I’m really not going to push the limits of my T1i so I thought I would save the money.

  • @PetiteMandoo - Thanks so much!!! I’ll look into it!

  • omg! so cute… that girl is a superstar.  altho your trip started out a lil difficult i am sure it was all worth it in the end… seeing zoe so happy!

  • OMG what drama at the beginning of your trip! So glad that u had a good time there…Zoe was a dancing machine! how cute!
