For those of you with children who have food allergies did you see the article on Ming Tsai in August’s Cookie Magazine?
He talked about how his oldest son used to have really bad food allergies. At 6 months they found out he was allergic to soy, wheat, dairy, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, and eggs. Seven of the “big 8″ foods that account for 90% of food allergies (the last was fish). Can you imagine how hard that must have been for him? Him, a chef. His wife, who was breastfeeding, had to cut all those foods out of her diet as well and when he was done with the boobie milk, they had to put him on a special formula. His son who is now 9 has outgrown almost all his allergies except for the nuts. So there is hope mamas.
I got lucky with Zoe and so far no allergies. I’m allergic to mangos and so is my mom and some of my sisters so I’m going to hold off on giving her that till she’s much older. I’m also allergic to geh-jang (a Korean dish which is made up of raw crabs marinated in soy sauce) which I ate a few days ago. I just decided I’m going to suffer the consequences and devour it like the crazy biotch that I am. SOOO WORTH IT. MMMM mmm MMMMM! Afterwards my stomach was burning, my lips and tongue were itchy, and I ran to the bathroom to take care of business. Haha…TMI? Who cares! So anyways my heart goes out the mothers that have to endure this kind of thing. I can’t even fathom this. It’s already bad enough that kids are picky eaters to top it off with limited food options because of allergies must be hell! He mentioned that whenever his son would be invited to birthday parties he would bring his own cupcake. Can you imagine? I give huge props to the mommies out there that go through this with their child every day.
Two things the Mingster recommended:
Cherrybrook Kitchen Mixes
Bell & Evans Chicken Tenders (Gluten Free)

I did read this article and I Blessed that my son can eat just about anything! (May be bad too as he gets older… the little monster!). In the CA Bay Area that recently did a story on this kid with a severe peanut allergy who’s pretty much kicked his allergy by taking very small incremental doses. It was some study done at a Tennessee Children’s research hospital over a two year span. There’s hope!
Wow… I know I’ve always been sensitive to chocolate, nuts and probably a bunch of other things. I recently found out, the hard way, that I’m allergic to salmon, very allergic… I pray my baby isn’t like me… Life would suck… I <3 chocolate…
Whoa. That’s a lot of allergies. I <3 geh-jang and now you made me want some!! It goes right through you, eh?
i just wanted to say we had those chicken nuggets last week (hubby fried them in a pan)… and they are sooo good. between the 2 of us, we ate two boxes in one sitting.
i feel so bad for kids who have allergies AND their mom’s! how hard it must be and sok-sang-heh. luckily, huddy doesn’t have any signs of any yet. man, i don’t know what i’d do if i had allergies to geh-jang…i LOVE that stuff! wait, actually….i do/did have some semi-seafood allergies but i still ate that thing! you’re right…so worth it!
Thanks!!! gonna share this one with the Wooooooooo-rld!
I was so happy to read Ming’s article last year. When we found out at 9 months old that Ethan was anaphalyctic to milk, egg and peanuts, it was heartbreaking. Our family had to go through many changes. I was determined to continue breastfeeding so I radically changed my diet to cut out ANYTHING that contained milk, all dairy, egg, peanuts and all nuts. I did this for 9 months after we found out (total of 18mo feeding) and it was HARD. Now Ethan is finishing up frozen BM and drinking soy. I guess though it trained us to read labels, shop better (easier to do in CA), and know ingredients. I wish more people were aware–we get a lot of upset parents when we decline parties at Chuck E Cheese, etc. but it’s for the better. I hope Ming brings more and more awareness out there–it’s scary to even go to eat out with my son. I love the Cherrybrook kitchen mixes–I am planning to bake Ethan’s 2 year old bday cake with this mix, but it sucks I can’t decorate
I guess I should count my blessings that Ellen’s only allergic to dairy and eggs and sensitive to apples and bananas ( and I swear she reacts to Vaseline on her face.) Luckily, Korean food doesn’t really include alot of eggs or dairy. But breakfast gets sort of tricky.
I LOOOOOOVE marinated crabs. I know I shouldn’t eat it being that I’m pregnant but I was CRAVING for some and my mom bought some fresh crabs from the market and made it for me this past weekend. OH MY… who cares about those stinky fingers afterwards. I’m actually drooling just thinking about them.
oh my god. I remember how allergic you were to geh jang, but YOU WOULD STILL EAT IT. And your family would support you by WATCHING YOU EAT IT AND LAUGHING AT YOU when your allergic reaction kicked in (really big botoxed lips…i mean REALLY big). Those were the days!
Remember we came home once and mom did the same thing with mangoes? and her face was so puffy her eyes were invisible! So sad (and funny) at the same time.
Allergies stink more when you’re allergic to foods you love!
@grechanka - my niece is allergic to dairy, eggs, nuts, gluten and some fruits. I made her birthday cake with the Cherrybrook mix and I was able to use store bought frosting with the fun-fetti (Pilsbury I think)? She ate it with no problems and she had fun decorating it herself.
@katchoi - hahah go ahead. where are you posting them. can i get the link por favor?
My youngest brother was allergic to rice, milk, wheat, crab, peanuts and probably a few more things. Can you imagine being asian and being allergic to rice?!!! I receive the strangest looks when I tell people I didn’t grow up eating rice. (We stopped worrying about his food allergies after we moved to SD and discovered he was more allergic to our new home/environment than food. His allergist told us at least his allergies to food won’t kill him compared to everything else!)
thanks for the links! my LO has a lot of food allergies (egg, nuts, dairy) so i had to cut everything out of my diet. upside, i was able to lose baby weight quickly due to not being able to eat my fav cookies, cupcakes, etc.
i’m ordering the cherrybrook mix right now from amazon~ yay, my baby gets to eat pancakes for the 1st time!!!
@s44eet5x4k - Lovethat stuff. We used the cherrybrook frosting last time. I will look at what else is out there. It sucks when all the kids can eat the sweet and Ethan can’t. We just turned down 2 bday invites to Chuck E Cheese coz I don’t wanna deal w/ the worry of all the pizza
@wedBliss - I feel ya! I nursed my son til 18 months and had to change my diet. It did help w/ weight loss
If you have any questions message me–I have been dealing w/ this for a year now and we’re starting to build a lot of resources. Ian’s french toast sticks are pretty good too!
